Same thing, I went to Chrome's website and it's a similar set up:

Yeah that's how it looks on mine. The way yours looks like your launching Chrome in Windows 8 Mode. I think that's what's it's called. But I'm on 7 so it might be completely different.

Mine updated on windows 7 yesterday and i had the chrome notifications (a little Bell shaped Icon) show up on my cpu that i never had before. Not sure if it's the same shyt but they are putting shyt on peoples cpu's.

In the show hidden icons on the bottom right of your computer. I did a search by date on google and found out they were doing stuff.

I'd search by date for your problem as well. That's the easiest way to find stuff like that.

Yeah that's the quick start or quick launch, and I did receive a notification asking me if I wanted to let Chrome run in the background while it upgraded, but I just hovered over it before getting a chance to read it and it took over my computer. After a reboot I have that new Chrome running. To be sure I uninstalled and deleted everything, THEN reinstalled Chrome, and that it's the same browser, so I'm assuming this an official update from Chrome.
