He was supposed to be Def Jam’s answer to 50 Cent. Joe should’ve had another album out in 2004, mainstream at this point didn’t abandon NY/east coast yet. So there was some freedom to put out what he wanted and it get played. I mean if Fabolous’ Breathe could’ve gotten burn in 04 mainstream then so could Budden. He missed his window to really sustain mainstream prominence.
I don't know if Jay-Z is directly to blame, but Budden missed a lot of artist development stuff and how to create good songs. Can blame Def Jam for that(which Jay-Z turned into a R&B label) and you can also blame Budden who may have been lazy/a dust head
Hov was like Drake except he used to jack your hit then x you out instead of featuring with you.

Joe Budden was a victim of a changing landscape in hip hop and bad timing. They wanted Budden to be 50 Cent and make chart topping hits when he was more of a Nas type of rapper, and if he was going to have mainstream success, that would be his lane.

Growing up, between the time period after Pump it up become old until I joined the Coli. I thought of Joe Budden as a one hit wonder sort of like J Kwon

What fukked up Budden was the drugs and his mouth (pause). It seemed like every other week he was having tension with legends over bs. Melle Mel, Wu, Prodigy (that one might not have been his fault). The video with the ice pack kinda encapsulated him.
But one thing no one can front on is that he keeps moving, keeps reinventing himself. Went from pump it up, to emo introspective, to working at hot97, slaughterhouse, to everyday struggle, to state of the culture, meanwhile doing his podcast. Yes he's a bridge burner, yes he's a little insane, but he throws stuff at the wall and once in a while it sticks. And he keeps working. Also he started elevating as soon as he got away from some of his bad habits. So yeah, i think these bad habits and mindset were fukking him up.
Also, don't get me wrong, he's very talented, but it's not like he was going to be a superstar strictly off of pump it up.

I think he's talented but he would have needed someone to produce (like a puff) his albums. Not just produce the music but also help guide the crafting of the vision and the songs.

Budden prettty much had everything lined up for him to take over.
He was pretty much Drake before Drake
AND
He came in the game with a certified CLASSIC hit record. PUMP IT UP.
Then after that everything just went to shyt.
Budden attributes alot of the fukkery to Hov hopping on the song and remixing it while dissing him. He says that it fukked up his trajectory and momentum

Even what you’re referencing was years later. Remember when this was supposed to be his single during 05 06 timeline? Budden was the first rapper I can recall that publicly took his label to task. He spent the mid 00s beefing with Def Jam
