Did Jay-z really ruin Buddens career? Where did it go wrong for him?

None of these are relevant to the idea that rappers in this 3 year stretch struggled to blow up.

I'm not sure how far back of a "legacy" you're looking at but the early to mid 00s had plenty of multi-platinum rappers. Nobody was struggling to sell due to the "fall of labels" yet. Those legacy artists simply had their time.

All that is irrelevant and after the fact, by the late 00s his glass ceiling was already set. This is why I said too much retrospection is being used.

You can apply a bunch of after-the-fact fuçkery to Game and personal issues to artists in general, Game still had a successful career due to his initial blow up.
When Joe was sitting in front of that camera holding a steak to his eye. We called him corny for that shyt! You’re trying to tell us that his track record doesn’t matter as to rather people will check for him and the legend of his career. No matter how much talent one has. If you are corny you will not rise to respectability. Hence my Game comparison, after the documentary dude was labeled corn status. Dude (both) couldn’t get out of his own way. History reflects that.

And yet Game had multiple platinum albums.

Yes Joe's track record in 2010 is irrelevant to 2003.

Nah. It was just not in the cards for him. I'm sure the Jay shyt didn't help, but it was never gonna be a big career for him, especially during that era.

He wasn't great at making the kind of music that was required to put him up there on the mainstream level, and the music he WAS great at wasn't gonna get him into that tier. Also there seemed to be some confusion as to what he was. I remember people having him sort of pegged as a party rapper based off of "Pump It Up", but at the same time all his other party records were complete flops. He was also kinda pigeonholed as a mixtape/freestyle dude who couldn't do any more than mixtape type shyt. His debut album was decent but clearly his attempt to make everybody happy. By the time he was making mixtapes like Mood Muzik, he had his own following that loved that shyt, but they weren't the ones out here buying albums like that. To be clear, Joe was never wack, just wack at trying to make club/radio records - it was never his lane and he eventually realized that himself. He would've actually fit in better in this era where you can drop an album full of bars over lo-fi beats and eat. He was too late for the mid-90s and too early for what people do now.

Even still, his sales don’t reflect his talent. Dude can’t even tour off of his platinum catalog. And for as dope as he is, he could’ve been bigger.

I Don’t understand the last part of your post. I’ll chalk it up to spinning your tires read the title of the thread and ask yourself who is responsible for Joes career turning out like it did. Was that t Jay or Joe?

When you sit back and think about it :jbhmm:

Budden prettty much had everything lined up for him to take over.

He was pretty much Drake before Drake

AND

He came in the game with a certified CLASSIC hit record. PUMP IT UP.

Then after that everything just went to shyt.

Budden attributes alot of the fukkery to Hov hopping on the song and remixing it while dissing him. He says that it fukked up his trajectory and momentum

BUT

Is that really it? :what: Could that act really have been the catalyst to the Budden on the podcast couch that we see today? :jbhmm:

:what:

The premise of the thread is why Joe didn't blow up. If Joe had Game's run, we would not be asking this question.
We’re not seeing eye to eye because you are equating career with sales/ monetary success. IMO they are both above average rappers. They both are not revered or in some cases respected within the industry and amongst fans. Being held in proper regard is why I can say both have had lackluster careers. The Super Bowl is a great example. As an emcee and what he stands for he should’ve had a spot. EM? 50? Game didn’t earn it based on his antics. Respected more he may have.
