I don't know about that either. For as great a voice as Johnny had, nobody could believe ballads sung by a 16-17 year old in the 80's. He was too young to be singing quiet storm radio. It took a few more years and the connection of New Editions fan base for him to take off as a soloist.

That's a big what if. All acts runs their course, no telling if they would've successfully navigated that bridge from 88-92 when music shifted. They would've had to compete with tony toni tone, jodeci, mint condition, hi five, troop, shai, silk, possibly boyz ii men.

NE propelled him to an album where he got to work with the two top production teams of their time, and the biggest album of his career. How much bigger would he have been without that NE album happening?
