Like him or not everyone knows hip hop was built on competition. For years now it has been in decline & a big part of that has been the lack of competition. Rappers are too soft & everyone's cool with everyone anymore. The beef that has occurred has been manufactured in an effort to gain publicity & sell records. Maybe this is too, but Kendrick called out too many relevant rappers for people not to take notice & step their game up. On top of that he's been putting out solid music for a while & has proved he's one of the best out, which gives him credibility. He doesn't really need the publicity but it seems he just wants to push himself as well as his peers. Thoughts?

I hate when people talk about someone "saving hip-hop." The shyt doesn't need saving. We have Drake, Wale, Kendrick, Cole and plenty of other dope artists.

If all the struggle freestyles that dropped over the last couple of days = saving hip-hop, then let this shyt die.

As long as they don't beef to sell records and use it to motivate them to drop better music, then I am all for it. In the short term, K-Dot made this genre interesting in the mainstream level.

For real.. Kendrick ain't saving hip hop lol he just has a lot of people that support him which is what is lacking.. SUPPORT

hip hop doesn't need saving. hip hop is fine. and before we get the competitive nature back, i think support needs to be there first. if anything these ole "hip hop is dead" "hip hop needs saving" types are the ones lowkey not doin shyt for what they feel needs to be "saved".

instead of seekin artist that are more along the lines of something they like, they just hate and hate and hate. i'll even go as far to say they're just casual rap fans mad as hell 90s esque or lyrical hip hop isn't being fed to them.. they actually have to do a little bit of work to find music they like instead of turning on the radio and it's right there. if more of these so called "hip hop" heads put the effort into finding something they deem is more worthy and supporting artist, then the industry wouldnt be completed flooded with the music artists we have now. (which is a major improvement from the ring tone rap time period). there's a decent balance, but not a big enough gap in terms of what separates it.

the reason artists like cole, kendrick, future, wale, drake, asap have taken over is because they have a fan base that supports them.

hip hop needs support more than it needs competition.

that's just my opinion, tho.. ya know.

I agree there's plenty of talented rappers, but nobody thinks the overall quality of music has been in decline? I'm not saying nobody can rap now but it almost seems like nobody outside of Kendrick or Kanye is really putting their heart in this shyt. Hopefully Kendrick calling everyone out changes that. Personally I think Drake, Pusha, Meek etc. can rap their asses off but nobody out there really has that attitude where nobody can fukk with them. shyt is just too friendly.

Not really. In battle rap? Sure. But innately? No. I understand being competitive in the sense of making better music...but going out with the intent of shytting on other artists? Thats not art. Its petty.
For years now it has been in decline
I'd say right when Wale, Drake, Cudi, and Cole were bubbling, things really turned a corner. The blog explosion in 2006 really helped too. So...no.
& a big part of that has been the lack of competition.
Completely disagree. There was already beef in hip hop/rap. 50 v Kanye. 50 v Ross. 50 v Fat Joe. Jay v Cam. Wayne v Jay. etc. etc. etc.
Rappers are too soft
What does that even mean?
& everyone's cool with everyone anymore.
If they're legitimately cool with each other? Then cool. I don't see why overcoming pettiness is a bad thing.
The beef that has occurred has been manufactured in an effort to gain publicity & sell records.
Why do you WANT artists to beef with each other? That shyt isn't cool. The fans are pretty cannibalistic to encourage that sort of thing.
Maybe this is too, but Kendrick called out too many relevant rappers for people not to take notice & step their game up.
He called out some of the most able and skilled artists currently in the game and possibly ever. Not much of a reach to do so. Many of whom are actually better than him in various aspects, not including commercial appeal.
On top of that he's been putting out solid music for a while
subjective
& has proved he's one of the best out,
yeah...but in relation to who?
which gives him credibility.
To you maybe.

you like beef because you think its good for the genre instead of ignoring how it destroy careers.

Entertainment is better than conflict.

Let me ask you this...

Everyone thinks that rappers are "too friendly" and they need to get "back to the bars."

How many people are going to BUY "Control"?

Do you want music or do you want bars? Two of the GOAT rappers went at each other's throats and died young.

An up-and-coming rapper (Canibus) invested in beef and his career sunk. 50 made GREAT music. Game made GREAT music. If they'd been more friendly, they probably could have continued to make great music. Who's footing the bill for the bars?

Is a track with KRIT, Drake, Kendrick, and Wale doing fire-ass 32 bar verses over a Premo loop going to benefit them more than "Pop That"?

Did "Burn" do as much for Big Sean and Meek as "Bandz" did for Juicy J, Wayne, and 2 Chainz? What are you all really willing to spend money on and support?

Hip-hop's never been dead or needed saving. The arm-chair QB's are just cheap and spoiled.

I'm not saying people should be beefing to the point where there's violence, but there was a time where it seemed like everyone legitimately wanted to be the best out, not just talk about it. Like if someone put out a dope album people would be out there trying to top it. Now if someone puts out some dope shyt everyone goes to twitter to big them up, then tries to jump on their next album.
