I was gonna say the same thing. Its was a bit a head of its time, but it did well for him. I had a love hate thing for vibrant thing. I wanted that old Q-tip from tlet/mm. The video definitely left the wrong impression

I got over when I listened to the whole album.

I was by far more annoyed that wack ass KORN had a feature on the album.

ultimately, yes the album was a big departure from the 'Tribe Called Quest' feel -- BUT GUESS WHAT? IT WASN'T TRIBES ALBUM.
he'd done the Tribe sound for years & seemed ready to move on, I wasnt at all surprised that when he finally broke out for himself that he switched the style up.

Seeing how cohesive the whole album is (pretty much ALL J.Dilla production -- clean, crispy, head nodding) I think it's safe to assume that's exactly what he actually wanted to express at that time -- which is kinda the opposite of "sellin out". it's not like he jumped on Timbaland beats, -- him & Dilla developed their own next sound.

Content-wise it was less "abstract" & that's probably the bigger disappointment than the production -- but lets not act like he hadn't previously beeen on that mackin shyt a good amount the time anyways. & the album still has shyt like:
Q-Tip - Do It, Be It, See It (The Ummah Production) (1999) [HQ] - YouTube
if it had a few more deeper tracks (& no KORN) it'd probably catch a lot higher regard. As is, I'd term it more "meh" than "sellout".
Phife's wackass solo proved he followed his intincts well
This man gets it :smugfavre:

Just because you like it doesn't mean he didn't completely go pop. Everything about the song is of the era. Jiggy 70's sample, Hype Williams video. If this isn't appeasing a record label then no rapper has made a dedicated radio single, ever.

Don't talk about my baby!!

Tip always gave me the impression of being an "experimenter" so to speak. It's not like he was rapping about putting slugs in nikkas, Tribe made plenty of songs about chilling and shyt, what's wrong with a club joint thats dope to boot?

I need another Kamaal album though. :noah:

Maybe with Breath & Stop, but Vivrant Thing was fresh, different and still Hip-Hop.

This is one of the biggest sell out songs of all time.. :beli:

If you grew up listening to Tribe, and was able to convince yourself that the "love movement" album was not that bad....

...This shyt by QTip finished off your child hoods love of rap music. Like Micheal Bay destroying Transformers... :scusthov:

..Tho in retrospect the song does bang. But still, a top 5 sell out song...

Nah but you're entitled to your opinion. Top 5 sellout song of all time? C'mon now be serious. MOP doing a song w LFO is selling out. Royce n Em doing a song w Bruno Mars is selling out. Vibrant thing is a banger that can b dropped in the club to this day n rock like it just came out. Ppl r reaching w this shyt.

Vivrant Thing isn't THAT different from something like ELectric Relaxation or Bonita Applebaum as far as content goes. of course i'm not saying the beat is as good or classic or anything like that but if Bonita was made in the mid-late 90s then it would have had a gang of bytches in small shorts dancing around as well

ATCQ always had corny raps (cf Bonita Applebum) mixed with their "better songs". That was their shtick, sometimes deep, sometimes goofy, sometimes flashy, it is what it is.
The Jam + the skit (every time we go out mane)
