It seems like when she blew up, record companies tried to emulate her sound. You no longer had to have a great singing voice. It was all about sing along melodies and hooks. Then you had Ja Rule singing as well.
J Lo blew up as a result. And the genre was never the same commercially. You had Beyonce go solo and literally dominate the vocal aspect of R&B for 2 decades.

Compare the number of R&B artists and groups that came out when Kiesha Cole dropped compared to when Monica first dropped?
It wasn't singular. You would've been better off saying Alicia Keys. But that's not the point. The genre was void of multiple R&B singers and groups dropping consistently. The R&B charts became insignificant and it was all about pop. Keisha Cole was pop, Alicia Keys was pop. The R&B label was fading. When you think Beyonce, you don't think R&B, you think pop.
That's the point.

Not really. All you gotta do is google R&B charts from the 80 through when Ashanti's album first dropped and the fall off is massive. For every 1 hit R&B song from Ashanti's era, I can name 5 from the 80's and 90's.
