Did the rise of Ashanti kill R&B and turned it into whispering pop&b?

No. At the time, when she came out, Murder Inc was dominating. Hip Hop's merge with R&B was already done. But you still had an emphasis on vocals. Ashanti changed that. It became more about the look and harmony and less about vocal ability. Based on who was being signed and the acts being put out after 2002 - 2004 circa, shyt changed. And the previous era still had a niche because there was no other alternatives. Eventually R&B and Hip Hop became meshed into 1 category.
This was already in full swing by the time Ashanti came out. Rap was several years into its dominance of Urban music.

There was a post on here years ago that blamed Ashanti for opening the floodgates of bad female R&B. He made a strong case

AGAIN... Record labels were literally trying to find new artists that looked and sounded like Ashanti. Vocal ability wasn't a priority. You can google it. It happened. was the beginning of the end.

This is where you're messing up. The beginning of the end started a decade before that.

Ashanti didn’t kill anything… she thrived for a good 2 years though. The Murder Trial kinda put a dent in her career and everyone else at Murder Inc.
Once Beyonce dropped “Crazy In Love”and started being on her diva shyt, that’s when R&B went down.

Mya killed that whisper R&B shut better than Ashanti to me

Rnb took its turn for the worst.

When the swv album that tried to copy the 411 remix album dropped.

Later rnb was rejuvenated mostly from kedar massenberg and michael jordan's hidden beach with jill scott.

Insignificant posting from an insignificant poster
Man, this thread got me revisiting Shanti’s discog.

Havent spun this album in its entirety since the first month i copped it 23 years ago at Circuit City.

Gawt damn this album got some major heaters (and im not even referring to the singles, which im so tired of and not remotely interested in).

Literally every song, whether lyrics, melodies or production (irv was in his fukkin birkin back then, damn).

Rescue, Movies, Always on time 2, Voodoo, Scared, her cover of Dreams… very strong tunes

Now i see why it sold 500k first week and went on to go triple plat.

Gonna visit chapter 2 next and see how that fairs. That debuted at numero uno and was also a successful followup.

R&B artists started wanting to add too many rap elements and turned into rap music lite with with singing on the hook but more of a rap style cadence.

Real R&B is now called Neo-Soul.
