Better question. If they did, why would the US want to hide it? You'd think that if the Cuban Missile Crisis almost sent us to war, then assassinating the POTUS would certainly send us there. What did the US Gov't gain by keeping it a secret?

From what I remember there were connections to Russian intelligence and Oswald that have never been fully explained. He may have acted on their direction, maybe he didn't.

I don't think the government did it but they probably knew it could happen and were monitoring it.

I also think it's important to remember that society and the country was very different than one we live in today.
