Lotta kats on the coli are way too invested in hating Jay and tidal. If eminem owned tidal they would be claiming he was a genius for breaking the rules and being unconventional. Fact is jay, tidal, rocnation have finally figured out the new music economy.
The old school measures of success are no longer applicable. Other artist are doing it too. On the extreme is Wutang by selling their album for 2 million to 1 person. According to the coli it should be considered a flop cause they only sold 1 copy... But it was actually a smart business decision for wutang who would have struggled to sell 50k even with a costly marketing campaign had they gone the traditional route.
Beyonce, Kanye, and Rhianna are all on the short list for the most popular social media figures in the world. All of them sell out stadium concert tours. All have a healthy supportive fanbase. What they are doing with Tidal and their latest releases is focusing less on gaining new fans and focusing more on maximizing revenue from the base they already have. And it's working... Rhianna's deal with samsung guaranteed profit. the tour was gonna sell out with her fanbase anyway. Same thing with Kanye and Beyonce. Beyonce's new formation tour is selling out. All their fans who actually spend money on them (music and tours) have already heard their new music and got the concert tickets even if its exclusive to tidal. If you haven't head Kanyes new album by now then your not really a fan or someone he is targeting so he is no longer gonna waste money marketing to you. That's the new rules.
