I never did.

I had a lot of hand me downs and cheap clothes and sh!t. I didn't really mind about that but the worse was going to weddings, communions and those type of functions.

I would always be embarrassed as f*ck cause all the other kids would be dressed in nice suits and expensive clothes and I had just casual everyday clothes. Sometimes at these functions I would rock my school uniform to look a little sharper but I was still :sadcam:

My parents didn't believe in expensive clothes for the kids. In my mind I was like "OK, cool. But at least buy me some kind of suit or smart clothes to go to these events!"

I felt like a tramp ass bum going to those things without being dressed up.

Not me. I mean I had decent clothes as a child, but a lot of it were hand me downs or layaway joints. Some even bootleg lol I would get only 1 pair of new sneakers once a year and that would always be on my birthday. Once I became a teenager and started making my own money, that's when I started branching off and hitting up certain spots for gear (ie the mall or going to NY and hitting madison ave or Harlem up)

I had a lot of no brand, bootleg sneakers

I didn't get my 1st pair of legit, official sneakers till I was about 8 or so. I still remember my 1st pair. It was some Reeboks. I had these joints:

As far as suits and other dress up clothes, only as needed.

Also, I don't know how it was everywhere else, but up here nikkas wasn't doing the mall thing too tough back in the days. Back in the late 80's and early 90's, nikkas use to go downtown and cop gear at the local "urban" stores that catered to the youth or the sneaker spots (whether it was Dr. Jays, VIM, etc). Only dude's that were really up on fashion or had money(whether it was through legitimate or illegal means) were hitting the mall up like that. But once the mid-late 90's came around, everybody from the hood was doing the mall thing, so it became too common.

Yeah, I dressed like a little kid, until I started getting into clothes when I was in 6th grade or so, my Mom looked out for me, I had all Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica, Polo, then the new Iversons, nikes, etc. I always appreciated that from her, she indulged me as far as clothes and shoes went.

Nope. My parents were from Nigeria so Goodwill was a godsend to them. The first "name brand" gear I had was a pair of FUBU jeans and a pair of FUBU sweats I had to BEG my mom to get me for back to school. This was in middle school. I have mixed feelings about this because I took a hard hit to my self esteem by not being in gear that made me confident in myself. But, having a smattering of old clothes taught me a lot about making do and it also made me appreciate clothes all the more. I looked good in my KMart and Goodwill gear.

I will make sure my kids dress well. But I'm not sure if I'll ever take them to the mall.

I didn't start getting/buying clothes I really liked till I was about 14 or so.

I gotta give a shot out to my grandma tho. She always sent me nice ass clothes for bdays and Xmas, even when I was a kid. She used to send me some nice Italian fashion kinda sweatshirts and sweat suits like Fila, Puma, Sergio Tacchini etc.

She still sends me stuff for my bday to this day and I'm a grown ass man!
