Funny thing is, Elijah Muhammad never liked Farrakhan trying to do music. When he died, his son took over and imposed a Sunni Muslim orthodox type of code of conduct which frowned upon its members performing music and singing and phased out the name Nation of Islam. He also removed the black separatist label, disbanded the Fruit of Islam and allowed white folks in. He wanted this new NOI to resemble culture in the middle east, less about WD Fard and the white man is the devil and more about Orthodox Muslim values.
When Wallace Muhammad resigned from his failing organization, Farrakhan who already had a splinter group brewing, took control, reintroduced the name Nation of Islam, brought back Fruit of Islam, stopped referring to the ministers as "Imams", kicked all the cacs out that they let in, and allowed its members to start doing music again.
Alot of folks thought that Malcolm was assassinated, Farrakhan then stepped in and ran it ever since, but Malcolm's assassination was in 1965 and Farrakhan didn't fully take control until 1977

Some mentioned before me, but Yes Farrahkan could also play piano, drums, steel drum. You even if you never heard his music he speaks with a certain musical tonality that is just natural. I think this helped his appeal with rappers, musicians etc.
