Long story short. I go to a men's church group once a month. It's made up of 3 Detroit churches. We discussed 2 clips. One the Chris Rock joke where he said "Men are the only creatures who don't get unconditional love". And the other was clip from Fences. The one where Denzel tells his son why he works and responds because you love me (paraphasing).

Anyway 3 simple questions. Has your father ever told you he loved you? And if not, did it bother you? Or did you just understand. My pops who passed in 2021 never told me he loved me verbally. The closest would be in greeting cards that (i.e. birthdays cards). But her never said "Love your dad" at the end. And no, this never bothered me because I know he did by his actions.

Funny thing is, growing up my pops would tell me he loves me, but moms never said it. She didn’t tell me until I was grown with kids, only after I would tell her, I had to show her that it was okay to say it. But pops? Yeah he was the nurturer. Moms was the hardcore parent.
Interesting thanks

On KRS One's nose, eating sunflower seeds.
Also, I don’t completely blame the older generation of fathers for not saying it. They weren’t TAUGHT to be vulnerable, meaning telling someone that you love them means you’re soft or weak. Also, it supposedly kept the kids “tough” mentally and not let love put their guards down.

Fathers not saying I love you I a deep rabbit hole of many reasons. However, there’s no excuse for them not to change and begin saying it.

Probably in some vague gesture when I was younger, but by the time he tried to say it and mean it, it was way too late. I was already done victimized by his choices and behaviour towards me nearing two decades. I ain't one of them "Forgive and forget" nikkas. Ain't no statute of limitation on my earned Ire. fukk 'im, unfortunately.
