They actually taught us about black history in school when I used to go to school 
. Almost every year we would read up on MLK, Malcolm X, Tubman, Parks, Chisholm, Fredrick Douglas (had to read the Narrative twice) and a whole bunch of others. My family, having recently come to the US, gave me info here and there.
1984 should be required reading for all students, it puts in perspective the social media culture of this generation and raises questions about how much privacy we really have now.
