First off, they shouldn't have sold or signed away their publishing in the first place. But if they can get it back, that's what you do, regardless of whatever it's worth today. If you own it, then you're doing sh*t properly.

Secondly, Mark Curry is easily the most forgettable signee on Bad Boy. No one even knows bro exists. His sh*t is most likely worthless, if we're being honest. But the other artists have classic tracks that they can still eat off today and tour performing. Bad Boy had a lot of legendary MC's, producers, and singers.

Unfortunately, Mark Curry is not one of them. So yeah, of course he'd rather get a check cut today because he ain't never do any work that's worth anything on the publishing side. That's not the case for the other artists that were on the label.

The cost of being an entrepreneur is your idea might not work...

I've read some artists have been shelved because they wouldn't give up any publishing...

Now they want a piece of everything

I told yall. People don't understand how publishing works and Mark Curry just broke it down. The shyt is worthless now that he squeezed all of the money out of it over the years. I mean the split might be different for Mase, Faith, and a few more artists but let's be real about it. The peak time to own them shyts has passed and payout will be very little.

There is no such thing as squeezed all the money out of publishing. If you've made timeless music, people will listen and your publishing will continue to make money. He could've easily bundled all these artists publishing together and sold it for 7 figures. Easily. Who knows why he gave them back, but what people are really doing is belittling these artists music by telling them that they no longer have value.

Did these nikkas have to sign their publishing over to Puff in the first place?
it was probably in the contract. Most contracts have artists give over a small piece of their publishing initially. THEN, before the album drops and artists are waiting, they are broke. So people take advantage of this by offering them a couple hundred thousand for another piece of their publishing. Nowadays, labels don't give a fuk about publishing and masters as much because the music is fuking worthless. Kids listen to an album for 2 weeks to a month and then throw it away. The big thing is to get artists to sign that 360 deal and labels(basically overpaid managers) get a piece of EVERYTHING they do. So if you sign a 360 deal, buy an NBA team and that NBA team balloons its worth to 3 or 4 billion dollars, guess what happens?
