One of The reasons why Timbo and Dre are 2 of the greatest, most of the time you dont realize that they used a sample

There was a thread on :hamster: about Timbo getting sued a bunch recently because he had been sampling a bunch of shyt. Forget exactly what kind of

shyt but it was something like some Arabic/Egyptian stuff. They found out he sampled and was making millions so they wanted that cake too.

Man this thread saddened me. Maybe I'm looking at it differently than some of you (in-fact I know I am.) But, this thread really just took away a lot of my respect for Timbaland.

I know he's a beast and one of the "all-time" names. But I had no idea that large of a percentage of his catalog was "lifted." Vid came on I was like:

:ohhh::dwillhuh::merchant::wtb::aicmon::scusthov:

I understand there are a lot of producers who thrive off sampling like Kanye, Jus Blaze etc. but I always just took their level of skill with a grain of salt.

I thought Timbaland actually played his shyt. Turns out 80% of his hits were loops that he put "cool drums" behind? :smh: I understand sampling is a part of hip-hop but damn homie.

Timbo's just the "cool drums" guy?

to take the loops, chop 'em a little, and add just the RIGHT touches to make it pop off is a lot harder than it seems on the surface.

That's cool and all I know working with samples isn't automatic win. There is a definite craft to it.

But at the same time... there's elements of auto refurbishing that are difficult as well... I still respect the skill and creativity of somebody who can build their own car more than the guy who puts a dope fish tank in the trunk of a Sentra.

Bugatti Manufacturer > West Coast Customs

Gotta respect the guys who actually play music more.

do u even know what it is to sample and make a beat?...u actin like all u do is add some drums n shyt..and that's DEF not the case especially for someone who's nice like tim cause he does FAR more than that...if u dont appreciate that then u dont appreciate a big part of hip hop...muhfukkas who was producers before hip hop aint "play shyt themselves"...they had whole orchestra's and musicians in the studio with them to get that sound that a hip hop producer samples...fact is hip hop is more "do it urself" production than any other genre of music and that's sampling included imo...

In one of the other posts in the thread I acknowledged that there is a craft and skill involved in utilizing samples. But, that makes you a sampler, not a composer.

And you're right, I just may not appreciate that aspect of hip-hop. I feel like that's okay. I don't think disliking one phenomenon in hip-hop takes anything away from my overall love for hip hop. I just want hip hop to be more genuine.

Also, "producers" from past eras who had whole music sections and hired players etc. are very different from what the "sampler" does. The producer in a session with paid musicians could say "Charlie, play a B#" and sing a melody and get the melody he wanted played. That's a completely different animal from listening to finished records and saying: "that part is dope let me take that and do something with it." In one case, you're composing music, in the other case you're utilizing music that's already been composed. Those are not the same.

Sampling is a big part of hip-hop. Sampling is near and dear to some hip-hop lovers' hearts. I get that, it's fine. But it is corny to me. I reserve the right to have that opinion. I like originality in art. And, I think sampling cripples hip-hop to an extent in terms of its credibility as an art form.

I recognize that there's more "do it yourself" work in hip-hop production at the same time part of doing it yourself is doing it yourself not having The Commodores or Parliament do it for you.

No disrespect just my opinion.

I can't understand how ANYONE who LOVES hip hop could hate sampling.

Name me a classic Rap album with no samples. :rudy:

It is easier to compose a Trap beat than create something new from something old.

Sampling is an amazing artform that needs to be respected when done correctly.

To each its own. I'm not a big 9th Wonder/DJ Premier/Alchemist fan for that reason. When Guru (RIP) made that speech on some Gangstarr shyt talking about "leave us alone for sampling" or whatever he was saying I was like :childplease: how bout tell your producer play the damn keyboard.
