He had turned heel and attacked Michaels a couple weeks prior to Mania... plus he was on the way out and was the strongest heel they had following Mania (they were still building Vader up).
It made perfect sense, really. Of course he lost to Taker at Mania, but storyline >>> wins & losses, and Taker had his own feud going.
