I recently got hooked up with a job getting paid really well for my field. I now get paid about double and sometimes triple my going rate. That's the pro to it. The cons are that there is no stability. People get fired for sneezing. There is no union. I have to travel up to 150 miles daily. No benefits. No pto

I just got a call from the mta. I passed their first. The second test is easy. The obvious con is the reduction in pay. And that I won't have the weekends off. The pro is that I'll be in a union with full benefits. Pension. Stability. The mta ain't shutting down no time soon
A job with no benifits in America is just not worth it unless you about to become a millionaire.

Yeah. This shyt is wack. This job actually has benefits but it's weird. Like I have to pay for it. I pay $4 an hour to get a few holidays and 5 pto days and 2 weeks vacation. If I wanted medical I'd have to pay another $6 an hour. That's why I say I don't really have benefits. Because I have to pay for it. In the long run I'd actually save money keeping my $4 an hour and not paid on holidays

I feel you I'm grown to hate my job and starting to feel like I can't get any further because of changes they have made but the benifits are to good lol.

Where I'm at the work is easy. The problem is the guys and management. If a senior guy tells a manager that Chris fukked something up, then Chris is staying home for 2 weeks. It don't matter who did it, they won't even ask Chris anything. He won't even know why he's not working

Benefits are part of your salary. So you’re paying for them whether you realize it or not with the MTA.

I had a very stressful job making $40/hour last year doing prevailing wage work in California. I typically worked 10-14 hour days, including Saturdays. So, you do the math on OT. However, I had NO quality of life. None. I left that to go back into sales. I don’t work weekends and still pull 6 figures. Long story short, I’d take the MTA for the stability. Stress kills. That stress of walking on egg shells will catch up with you.

Side note: I’m part of a class action suit against that company for overworking employees and breaking state regulations. It’s being settled.

All my work is prevailing. People make 150k working 35 hours here. I wish I could save to at least put a down payment on something if I do go to the mta. And as stressful as this job has been, I remember how stressed I was when I wasn't making as much

Every employee pays for benefits. Your employer was just courteous enough to show you the overhead cost.

But check me out, knowing alat is power in the long run

My employer is scandalous. People are always getting checks when the department of labor investigates them. For the first 5 months I didn't take the benefits and I was getting paid more. I didn't have any pto and wouldn't get paid holidays

No. I took one test in August. They called me today to take the next one in March. I don't know the process after that. It shouldn't take much longer after that if they decide to hire me.
My biggest issue is this. As much as I would love to work for them, I've never made this much and I won't ever make that much working with them. This is the first time I'm not living check to check. The last couple months is the first time I've been able to get myself whatever I wanted without caring what the price was. It is the first time I've been able to save.
I have been saving as much as I can. I have always wanted to work with them but shyt is going good for me right now. I know everybody here is claiming to make 6 figures but I could realistically make that this year while working 30 hours a week.
Doing this until I get tired of it and then joining the mta is not possible. They don't sit around and wait.

30 hour workweek and a fantastic hourly pay rate is ill. How long does it take you to cover the 150 miles to get to the work site?

Depending on your age, if you're a younger person, maybe that job is better bc you can stack SO MUCH money that if it falls through, you'll be straight for quite a while.

On the other hand, being able to join a union job where it's hard to get fired and have benefits + pension is hard to pass on.

You have to keep in mind your current situation and what you want to have short and long term. Idk if MTA is one of those places you can reapply later and still get in since it's probably more dependent on what you're applying for.

I work a job similar to the latter and would probably move to the former if I could, despite being older. I would rather have more workable liquid assets atm to make some stuff I want to do start happening. The stability is one requirement I am kind of feeling stuck to that prevents me from leaving, but I think I am a unique case. I'd give up the stability for stupid amounts of bread, and I make pretty good money I guess- but I know I could make a lot more doing something I may not like for a couple years and figuring the rest out later.

I work in construction. Sometimes the site is 20 miles away. Sometimes it's 80. It takes at least 2 hours to get there sometimes. Sometimes I work at night and then the next morning. I've even paid for hotels to not have to make the commute again the next day. Then I have to pay gas. Sometimes tolls. All this driving adds maintenance costs to the car as well. But I am off weekends which means a lot because that's when I see my kids.
I'm 36. I've never made this much before. And if I lost this job I'd be lucky to make 50k. I would like to stay so I can save enough to buy a house for the kids. If I didn't have kids shyt would be different. But the future with this company is sketchy. I'm getting too old to be bouncing around from place to place tho.
The mta doesn't hire often. It could be 5 years until there's another exam

The pay is usually between 58 and 112 an hour. That's a lot of money for me. I make some sacrifices

Take the MTA, that stress your going to put on your body and heart isn’t worth it.

If your goal is to buy a house, being able to buy it with that much more down is going to make things a lot easier. You could take the job making half and suddenly have periods where money is tight. Plus right now, you are making that and able to see your kids regularly. That is the luxury I don't have and want. I envy you breh :mjcry:

Now that I know your age and situation, take the MTA job breh. Just start putting away as much money as you can with the current gig until you get hired on. Also stop “buying whatever you want”. You’re wasting money. I know how that goes. You’re probably buying bullshyt just because you can. Been there. I bought so many custom NIKEs (NIKE ID) that I only wore a few times, a custom made leather jacket I only wore a few times, etc. SAVE, SAVE, SAVE. You should be able to, making $10K to $12K/month.

I actually don't waste money at all. I have like 2 pairs of shoes. The only thing I buy are tools sometimes. I don't have any vices. I don't have any hobbies either. I don't go out. It's more of a mental thing. I did buy a TV but that was it
