He was so highly regarded that Red Auerbach wanted him to leave Virginia after his freshman year, and Boston would draft him. Sampson said he was happy in college and stayed all 4 years, winning player of the year 3 times.

I don’t know if players did one-and-done back then. Either straight out of HS (Moses, Dawkins), two college seasons (Magic, Isiah), and most guys who left early was after 3 years.

It worked out better for Boston, since that year they ended up trading for Robert Parish and drafting Kevin Mchale.
