Chat startup Discord Inc. has halted talks to sell itself to potential suitors including Microsoft Corp., according to people familiar with the matter, as it resumes interest in a potential initial public offering down the line.

Microsoft had been in advanced talks to acquire Discord for at least $10 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported last month. Those talks ended without a deal, though it is possible they could be rekindled in the future, some of the people said.

no doubt, but with the way cats move on to the next, esp nowadays, I dunno.

Slack just got purchased for near $30 billion just four months ago. :francis:

This is a different scenario than just standalone platform purchases. MS needs Discord more than Discord needs them. MS is trying to fill a gap in their Skype setup to make a push for gamers, and dovetail that with business comms that Skype/Teams already covers. Slack is in direct competition with those last two and has better app connectivity(Dropbox, Adobe CC, Google Drive, etc). Add in Discord to Skype/Teams + the entire MS 365 lineup and that's a pretty big deal.

IMO ten billion is lowballing, but eh :manny:

The one that said MS needs Discord more than the other way is probably right, they probably factored that into the asking price and MS wasn't interested

That's fine as long as your income's diversified, you don't get far in the social media space if it's your only cash flow. Facebook makes its money selling ads + data. I know they want to be publicly listed but then you have to juggle investors wants & needs with teenagers that only care about Warzone, Attack on Titan, and Onlyfans links. Not a good mix.

Speaking of Snapchat does anybody still care about Clubhouse? That's how finicky this shyt can be, best of luck to them.

I’m starting to notice a lot of these companies/apps fizzle out after their initial buyout phase

I’m starting to notice a lot of these companies/apps fizzle out after their initial buyout phase

Original creator got paid, packed their shyt up, and is no longer associated with the company

Parent company doesn't have the vision to keep the ship afloat the same, if they did there would've never been space for the creator in the first place

Userbase tapers off until the app is good for nothing but data harvesting. Parent company announces they're closing service 3-5 years from buyout window

Happens that way all the time. That or another app comes along and you're stuck having to play catchup copying their features or you risk losing users. I would've taken the billis but hey if you're a fan of Discord then this is the best thing that could've happened.
