You might as well download UE, Unity, Lumberyard, or CryEngine since they're all free, and pick up Blender and maybe Maya. If you're trying to break into the industry, get familiar with their tools.

The software on sale
Alright I get you now. I'd still recommend Unity for those without coding experience. A guy I've done work with is an artist by trade but has written some pretty interesting scripts. And Unity's learning curve is much smaller than the other 3 engines due to the great documentation and amount of tutorials out there.

The engine I got started with was this: BYOND - Developers - Make & Play Online Multiplayer Games . It's not the prettiest piece of software to use, but you can work on some skills. Some intelligent folks have put up good tutorials to get started with. Last time I checked, you could also play other people's creations, and it's multiplayer friendly. Just something that may be of interest to people.
