DISCUSSION OF THE DAY: Was Hugo Chavez A Hero Of His People? (Or Was He Corrupt?)

Alright, I'm still learning a lot about Hugo Chavez. His death was kinda suspicious to me. I don't think he naturally got cancer. Anyway I have heard mixed reviews of Chavez. We all know the drugs cartels were big in Venezuela. However, what do you think of him? Some people said he cared for his people. Then, some said that he was horrible.


I am a Democratic-Socialist and like how that is implemented in Sweden.

Heart in the right place, he had some successes, the pink tide states have always struggled, thanks to Intenational monetary organizations, US interference and massive corruption exacerbated by the drug wars.
If he'd diversified their economy, Venzuela would be one of the fastest growing states, but he didn't, he relied on oil

Yeah, that's what I figured. I was like reading up on him a lot. Heard mixed reviews, so I told myself his heart was maybe in the right place.

He wasn't as bad as other dictators in South America or amongst those in history but he wasn't that great.

Don't think he was a bad guy at all. He could have been wayyyyy worse. If he was Bashar Al Assad, his opponents would be in mass graves. Maduro is also similar.

But Venezuelas core issues predate him. A lack of diversification in the economy and bad currency policy hurt them immensely. Capital controls by the state also were inefficient under his tenure.

May he RIP and I'm glad he was a proud Pardo Black. As long as we are on this Earth we will be a target. I learned that the hard way and it pushes me that much harder.

Decent guy. Some successes, some failures. Venezuela's lack of economic diversity doomed the Bolivarian Revolution (that iteration of it, at least). Obviously, socialism's basis can't be high oil prices Nor can you sustain an alternative to the Washington Consensus on high oil/commodity prices.
