Why weren't these albums deemed the automatic "classic" like TPAB?

I could argue that the content on those albums listed in the title were actually more thought provoking than the content on Kendrick's album.

Or is the albums listed above casualties of the short span' barely paying attention generation ??

*not trying to knock Kendrick's album at all but the more I hear people talk about it like it's never been done before or it's "Refreshing" I begin to wonder if they just started listening to hip hop in 2012 or 2013 and still missed a few of the joints I listed in the title.

I fukk around and bring up one of the albums in the title and n_ look at me like I'm crazy.. Like I just shut the fukk up and run with "TPAB is the best album since....." and I'm confused...

Like something ain't adding up... like hip hop fans are picking and choosing when it wants to listen to certain artists now...

Easily Distant Relatives, it also is a classic to me. Brilliant album, love it.

I feel like the production, content, and guest features make that one of the best albums of the 2010s but when I say that people look at me like :bryan: and in the same breath preceded to tell me about how Classic TPAB is

And I'm like :dwillhuh::snoop::dahell::mindblown:

Yeah, I haven't thought about rankings but it's certainly 1 of the best albums to me. I liked Untitled a lot too.

Watch the throne doesn't belong to me

It's just preference at the end of the day.. Some of it is him being in the position he's in and dropping an album like that.. That's refreshing to me... You could argue ye did it but that shyt was trash to me

Anybody saying this hasn't been done before is an idiot though....

Musically that kdot is a damn good album to me

Now let's talk Yeezus

:wow: Technically, you're right "it's arguable" but breh It's not even an argument...

Ye went right to SNL before the album dropped and performed New Slaves

"I throw these Maybach keys, I wear my heart on the sleeves
I know if we the new slaves, I see the blood on the leaves
I see the blood on the leaves, I see the blood on the leaves
I know that we the new slaves, I see the blood on the leaves
They throwin hate at me, want me to stay at ease
fukk you AND yo' corporation, y'all nikkaz cain't control me
I know that we the new slaves, I know that we the new slaves
I'm 'bout to wild the fukk out, I'm goin Bobby Boucher
I know that p*ssy ain't free, you nikkaz p*ssy ain't me
Y'all throwin contracts at me, you know that nikkaz cain't read
Throw 'em some Maybach keys, fukk your "ces't la vie"
I know that we the new slaves, y'all nikkaz cain't fukk with me
Y'all nikkaz cain't fukk with 'YE!! Y'all nikkaz cain't fukk with 'YE!
I'll move my family out the country so you cain't see where I stay
So go and grab the reporters, so I can smash they recorders
See they'll confuse us with some bullshyt, like the New World Order
Meanwhile the DEA, teamed up with the CCA
They try and lock nikkaz up, they try and make new state
See that's that privately-owned prisons, get yo' piece today
They prob'ly all in the Hamptons, braggin 'bout they made
fukk you AND yo' Hampton house, I'll fukk yo' Hampton spouse
Came on her Hampton blouse, and in her Hampton mouth
Y'all 'bout to turn shyt up, I'm 'bout to tear shyt down
I'm 'bout to air shyt out, now what the fukk they gon' say now?"

On Sight

Blood on the leaves
I Am a God :wow:

Kanye stepped right up into the limelight and took it there. I love TPAB but it's almost like fans are taking the album out of context and when you hit them with the last 7 years (NOT 20 or 15) 7 years they look at you confused

I've always loved Untitled and Distant Relatives. Untitled is my personal favorite Nas album.

Kendrick's album is refreshing in the sense that NO MC in his age range is making the type of cohesive projects or speaking on the themes he is. His production is fresh as well and he takes risks musically that pay off. But nothing he's doing or saying is something so profound to be point where you can't easily see the Nas/early Kanye/Public Enemy/Early Ice Cube influences...

Distant Relatives is CRIMINALLY fukking underrated, Nas and Damien cooked up absolute FIRE with that album. That album is the pro black album that should've gotten the same love Kendrick got as far as speaking on the universal black experience.

It's ok to claim it's refreshing because of the climate but to deem it a classic?

I can't get these young nikkas to explain themselves on why they think it's classic? Let alone what classic means to them.

This isn't even providing context for them like "his/this album has been done before and even better by other artists" but explain why you think it's classic?

- The production is retro. That's G-funk lil nikka. That's G Funk in 2015.
- Those Jamaican hooks that's early 90s late 80s like nikka.
- The content? The content isn't even challenging. I agree that it's dope to hear another mainstream conscious album but King Kendrick didn't say anything that hasn't already been said (within the last 7 years)

We can't even talk impact/replay value because it just dropped a few weeks ago... So how in the world is it "classic"?

I guess I'm really stuck on how people can't explain why it's classic and when they attempt their opinions to support the claim don't make sense. Makes me think nikkas aren't really hip hop heads like the profess to be.

all poor albums... I guess the best of the bunch was WTT but it was a 7 at best...

Fam, I brought you in the thread because I've seen you come out of character and talk hip hop. Those albums were all solid. There was nothing poor (maybe you could argue production below average) but nothing poor about those albums.

Watch The Throne was a watered down version of Distant Relatives but it was refreshing to say the Kanye/Jay union (a mainstream/corporate) drop a mainstream conscious album for the masses.

Just because they dropped a mainstream conscious album while they were popular didn't make it an automatic classic either. I feel like these young hip hop fans should at least be able to explain themselves...

You aint even tag me breh... seen this shyt through my peripheral vision.

WTT had some high points that I loved, but I wouldnt call the album a conscious album by any stretch. Yes the Murder to Excellence joint was fire, but shyt like Lift Off were ass. Otis was sick but wasnt talmbout shyt. While "No Church" was prolly my favorite its subject matter aint somethin the black youth is ready for cuz they comfortable in their coc00n of lies. Etc.

Yeezus is simply the worst example of music put on MP3, CD, tape, record, or any media really. I got some of the dualities, but it was just bad and comes off as more ignorant than introspective.

The ****** mixtape actually had some shyt that I liked... I still play that Be A ****** Too joint. But the album?
And I dont fukk with the Damian Marley joint at all.

It seems like these cats simply struggle at making a cohesive album with legit contents.

I have to agree that Otis from a content standpoint wasn't saying much however, the video was powerful. There is no way you can't tell me the joints below weren't as conscious as Jay/Kanye have gotten in sometime. The album def had other joints that weren't conscious but they brought it on that album.

New Day
Murder to Excellence

Again, the focus is content and I'm confused at was so despicable about Yeezus? If we're discussing the sub-themes/subjects on the album and the way Kanye conveyed his message it's a very strong project. You can't listen to a joint like Black Skinhead or Blood on the leaves and state it's just bad. As a matter of fact, I would argue with more time that album gets better.

Untitled :wow:

Now with respect to how you deal and your well known disdain for Nas I know you're very anti his status among other great MCs HOWEVER, much like my points with Yeezus, let's talk content. When you go back and sit through Untitled, Nas did an amazing job of conceptualizing life as a black/(black man) in America in the 2000s.

-He provided historical context while covering the effects/impact of media on black self esteem,
-post traumatic slave syndrome
-The hip hop minstrel show in America
-Minister Louis F's perseverance/constant battle of white supremacy
-The painful love of materialism & lack of ownership of brands we support

Sly Fox
Fried Chicken
Tesitfy
Y'all my n_
America
Make The World Go Round
You can't Stop us now
Slave & The Master

I know the production wasn't the best and some of his historical facts weren't accurate but the game in his bars on the album is timeless. What turned you off about DR?
