The assumption here is that 3rd party voters were ever democratic voters.
You always have to contend with third party opposition. Trump had to deal with Gary Johnson and Trump overcame it. Romney also had to deal with Gary Johnson and lost. Obama had to deal with Jill Stein in 2012 and even worse, and had to deal with both Cythia Mckinney and Ralph Nader in 2008.
