You think it's just lounging, but what pays the bills isn't only thing that sustains a community or culture. That space IS work. They touch base every day, everybody knows what everybody else is about, conflict resolution, which kids need help with tutoring, business deals, a lot of political back and forth that never ends, marital advice, and everything else that holds things together.

Considering they have a few thousand years' worth of history backing them, it's fairly safe to say that it works.

I think the numbers today are close to 20k and they are all concentrated within a few neighborhoods so their visibility is more significant. And it's not large in comparison to the city's population. It's significant in comparison to other Ethiopian populations across the US. But as was stated, DMV, Minnesota, Georgia, NYC, and maybe Cali also have significantly larger populations.

I honestly envy them. they have a social life that most of us don't and insular community that protects them from dealing with cacs at work as much as we do and so forth. the fact that they have so many restaurants and bars in my city is amazing to me. they took over what used to be Greek town. the greeks cried when they wanted to name part of the strip lil Africa. they made cave dweller type comments. Ethiopians didn't blink they just kept buying up old greek strips and pushed the boundaries of their presence further. what we call greek town today is dominated by Ethiopians to the east of its former strip and they have many more businesses than what is left of the greeks to the west of them. I swore there was no way they could survive I wondered where the demand was but they do well. i'll see one of their restaurants stand for 5+ years while the neighbors have changed menu ownership business type etc multiple times. it's worth admiring.
