That shyt outta control. I grew up in downtown Silver Spring in the 90s/early 00s when it was still a rathole and there was only a tiny handful of Ethiopians.

Downtown Silver Spring has great location and some of the best public schools in the country so I think that made more Ethiopians/Eritreans move. DC was also wild as shyt back then so Silver Spring was a better option. Ironically, Silver Spring has a crime problem now.

I honestly envy them. they have a social life that most of us don't and insular community that protects them from dealing with cacs at work as much as we do and so forth. the fact that they have so many restaurants and bars in my city is amazing to me. they took over what used to be Greek town. the greeks cried when they wanted to name part of the strip lil Africa. they made cave dweller type comments. Ethiopians didn't blink they just kept buying up old greek strips and pushed the boundaries of their presence further. what we call greek town today is dominated by Ethiopians to the east of its former strip and they have many more businesses than what is left of the greeks to the west of them. I swore there was no way they could survive I wondered where the demand was but they do well. i'll see one of their restaurants stand for 5+ years while the neighbors have changed menu ownership business type etc multiple times. it's worth admiring.

This checks out. I was in Houston for the Final Four. After the games, it was hard af for anyone get a Uber/Lyft. People were waiting a hour and the getting the shyt cancelled.

A couple blocks away seemed like a network of Ethiopian looking brehs setting up shop in the parking lots with new Tahoes and shyt. Suited and booted. Asking people if they needed a ride, listening to them complain about Uber, got the info about where they needed to go….then hit em with “it’s $300 for a ride” at the end .


Most brehs knew to cut thru the bs off rip and ask the price….cacs didn’t and were infuriated, but they definitely caught a few suckas

Somewhat off topic, but Ethiopians are the only black people I have ever seen owning taco/burrito shops. Years ago I was in DC on Capitol Hill and had a burrito at an Ethiopian-owned place, and then years later in Dallas I stopped by a random taco place on the humbug and it was run by an Ethiopian guy with some eses working for him.
