It depends on the context: number of tracks have a massive influence. A 23 track album doing 200k is pretty MEH... and is less impressive than a 10 track album doing 150K.

Also, if an album has legs, its even better.

I don't think they matter. People negatively spun the first week sales of GNX and the Drake/Party albums yet they're still in the top 5-10 of the charts today, months after release. The charts are designed to track consumption now: how often are people listening to the album, or one song, or many songs. If you have a hit it will increase your sales. If you have multiple hits, or multiple noteworthy tracks people fukk with, the album will sell for weeks/months.

This reason alone is why I think 1st week sales matter. Everybody that was going to buy the album went out and bought. After that, is it possible for the artist to reach the masses?
Yes because when a song or single catches on then it’s usually sales more. New people discover the artist or album and want to support or hear more.

That’s why they tour and drop singles and videos. To attract more listeners etc.

caring about “sales” in the streaming era where nobody’s buying albums has always been nonsense
Agreed. But to be fair streams are a better indicator of what people are really listening to.

We can see in real time how popular songs are and if they have legs. Random songs go viral and pop off all the time now.

If there’s no price of admission it’s a big difference. lol. People ain’t selling shyt but a dream these days. I hate the music industry right now.

People still buy cds and vinyls and merch.

It’s not hard to understand. 1500 streams is finally equivalent to 1 album sold.

Anyways their money doesn’t affect us so not sure why people care so much anyways.

complete bullshyt. Cuz nobody is buying and owning shyt. I BUY my favorite albums on vinyl or cd. A mf streaming music can't say shyt to me about sale from his favorite artist
Where the hell do you even play cds though?

Physical media is just more junk I don’t want to collect at this point. It just collects dust in my closet.
