Even if you couldn’t afford to pay them, you need to call them, tell them your situation, offer them a small sum, and that will work. When you let them get charged off, and go to collections, they get sold to junk debt buyers who get court orders to garnish your bank account and wages, and you mess up your credit.
But hey, keep doing things the wrong way, then complain about the system.
