No, nikkas have liked anime and have been nerds from the beginning but got bullied. Now that it's culturally acceptable they feel more comfortable coming out of that "closet". 
Now on the other hand, some of the WOMEN clinging onto it are flat out clout chasing and using it to get their follower count up. They throw it in the bushes once they attain a certain "status". But only some.
There's chicks out there like Meg Thee Stallion that were legit anime fans before they blew up and still claim it.
