I totally believe that some of these athletes are dumber than a 3rd grader, they get their asses kissed and pushed through school once they're athletic ability is known

Is a physicist the standard for smarts or intelligence?
There are plenty of avenues where most physicist would be considered dumbass and score the equivalent of a 7 in that fields proficiency test
Every school has a 99% acceptance rate for a good-great athlete
Those instincts aren't based off of intelligence?
Not really. If somebody throws something you'll generally move out of the way. What does that have to do with knowing how to read or write? Nothing. Just the same as running fast and juking people. Poor instincts is the worse thing an athlete can have.

While a physicist may not know how to change the oil to his car or do his own plumbing- most would agree that physicists/engineers have much stronger logic skills than most. Logic and basic math, thats really all the wonderlic evaluates.
