Ain't got kids, but I've been "step daddy" to a few whenever I got tied down with a broad with kids and I did this to an incessant level. Especially with younger ones who were interested in reading but weren't really being guided towards literature like that. And if you're wondering if Ipads changed that....then sadly, yeah. 'cause some people think it's "A new way" to do bedtime stories by putting on a tablet and having a video of someone narrate a picture book or cartoon because they're thinking more on the kid's entertainment, coupled with their impatience at spending quality time with kids, actually reading a book on some lazy shyt.
You sit, you read, comment on the pictures, have conversations about why the eggs are green or why the wolf wants to eat the piggies, you get them to read a page, and you fukking bond. If it works, you ask 'em to bring/look for books and nurture a small reader who'd do it independently as opposed to turning into one of these digital screen kids who can't even tell time on a fukking wrist watch or shut off when the Wi-fi goes down.

I did. Then when they could read I’d let them read the stories to me instead. Then when they got to longer chapter books, I stopped and just let them read whenever they wanted to. Can’t be sitting in there 30 minutes listening to 3 chapters of a book calling it a “bedtime story.”

Edit: tablets have nothing to do with reading. It’s a completely separate activity that had no bearing on what we did with our children from a reading perspective other than limiting how much time they could be on them.

Did it help her get into reading?
Honestly i think it was more about me being paranoid. Babies cry alot but also sleep so quietly you wonder if they are breathing.
I did that to sooth my nerves and help her go to sleep. Once she was a bit bigger i no longer bother with that. I focused more on getting her into music as she got older.

If definitely helps, but you also have to limit other distractions early on so they appreciate reading as opposed to the quick endorphin hit from tv and other technology. My youngest also saw us reading so that helped too. Now, when she can’t do other stuff she reads for her own entertainment, without being prompted. Got to the point where we bought a couple bookshelves and created a reading nook in her room and called it a library because she was going through books so fast. Teachers even started giving her books for free to take home. Now she always scores the highest (or one of the highest) on her reading/language arts testings.

Our oldest got too caught up in devices early, so her reading faded by the time she got to around 5th grade. Live and you learn

I actually listen to classical music with them on the drive to school sometimes if they were acting too rowdy when getting ready.

Calms them tf right down 😆
