I did a thread last year called "No Rapper sold 1 Million Copies in 2012". Well we got some Platinum albums this year but if you look across the board. It's clear sales are dying in Hip Hop even more than other genre's. Look at Big Sean and 2 Chainz numbers. Both of them are all over the radio and social media. Yet people did not cop the album. I wouldn't be shocked if Drake slightly underperforms just like Ye and Wayne did. It's been about "Singles" now for the last several years but even the Hit single thing isn't really pushing people's units like that. It's clear Hov was right to do his samsung deal and Em is right to do the Call of Duty thing. Hip Hop has to find new revenue streams cause albums sales aren't cutting it and Hov clearly saw the writing is on the wall. Soon even some of Hip Hop's most popular rappers won't be able to go Platinum.

the thing is... these rappers lie all the time about how much money they're making off of touring...they still are under contracts & have obligations...

If u can't convince a fan to pay $10 to own your music what makes you think they'll pay $25 to see you live?

there's a lot of smoke & mirrors in the music industry & when artists albums brick where do you think their recouped money comes from... :mjpls:

Get singles that are bangers and get booked for shows. That is the only thing that matters in this era. Billboard is not a factor anymore , trust and believe that.

not completely true. depending on your deal, if you don't recoup the budget it took to make your album and your label eats off everything you do, youre still fukked. you can eat good off singles and tours, but it doesn't solve everything. somebody like roscoe dash when he's busy prolly does better than most rappers since he writes, guests and can get a lil change from club appearances without anybody reaching in his pocket for a percentage every time he wants to take a shyt.

big sean might have something worked out with no id and 2 chainz w/ everybody he guest'd on the past 2 years. they better hope so. record companies write all type of shyt in these contracts to keep nikkas broke.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the reason the 360 deal became popular with record labels? Since albums aren't selling like they used to they getting their money through everything the artist does?

Yes... and when you don't recoup the cost of the album with sales they take it out of your touring money PLUS the cut they would've gotten anyway from your shows...

im curious how often this really takes place. why would pharrell do a handshake deal for producing and appearing on a 2 chainz album when he doesn't even have a project on the horizon? and knowing the industry, a 2 chainz verse in 18 months aint near what its worth today...which aint what it was worth 12 months ago. id want my money then and there

Speaking if billboard, why they got fifty leven charts per genre? Streaming, download, digital, hot, mainstream, etc. what the fukk is the different between the hot r&b chart vs the mainstream chart. Why isn't streaming merged with radio play etc #why

That's not necessarily true.

I haven't paid for music since 2007 but I will pay to see an artist I like. It's a good social experience :manny:

I'm pretty sure it cost considerably less to make an album these days.

I'm thinking the record label is making good money off of something like 250k in sales

You're not the average fan tho... nobody on this board is...
I know "average fans" and they go to shows all the time. Paying $60+ for some arena shyt is one thing. Paying $15-35 to see an artist at the House of Blues is something to do on a Friday night. It's cheaper than the club imo
