One can take responsibility for their own actions while still recognizing that it is a disease they have.

Yes you aren't incorrect but in my personal view the main cause of addition is the individual not the substance or action. like how some people can smoke weed and not do it all the time or drink etc its a personal cause and the "disease's" cure is self improvement. Just my view.

I'm kind of torn on the subject. There was a time when I was positive it was. I'm not as sure anymore.
I am an addict, never hard drugs, but an alcoholic currently sober. Gambling obsessions as well.
I have more thoughts on the subject that I'll drop as the thread progresses, but do you guys believe it is or not? And why or why not?
No. I don't.
I believe that addiction is not single-faceted. One can be physically addicted to substances and others can be mentally addicted to compulsive behavior as a way to cope with problems in one's life. Or both. Problems that are related to personal character flaws.

I go to a 12-step recovery group. I don't judge if someone has an addiction.

If its all in your mind then explain full blown alcoholics who have went into seizures and shyt then died from withdrawls. Im telling you a chemically dependant alcoholic cant just quit cold turkey but since you seem to have all the answers ill just let you cook :francis::snoop:

You are confusing addiction with poisoning yourself via alcohol consumption.

Addiction has no symptoms. Its simply another name for a person without self control.
A person addicted to cutting themself or smashing their head into trees or drinking alcohol suffers no ill effects in a room by themselves without knives or trees or liquour.

This however does not heal their already cut up arms or already bleeding forehead or already shot liver via their previous self-mutilation.
So a person that has destroyed themself via ingesting poisonous alcohols and ethanols will have various degrees of system damage whether they stop or continue. That is the nature of poisoning yourself for years. What did you think would happen?

Regardless, this has no bearing on their ability to stop.
An individual of strong will can decide at any time to stop doing anything whatsoever.

when it changes the physiology of the body then YES it is a disease.

a lot of drugs and alcohol falls under this category. You can die from stopping certain substances cold turkey

edit: I work around drug/alcoholics all the time so I've seen their treatment first hand. Changed my whole outlook because I was once ignorant like some of the mogs in this thread. :wow:
