I thought you locked it once and let it grow from there without touching.
That's called semi-freeform. A true freeform is no manipulation(outside of washing) from start to finish.

Locs usually start showing up at 3-4 months, but it varies from person to person and it depends on your hair texture. The kinkier your hair, the faster it should take.

Damn been growing my hair for 9 months and still no fee from. Well I do use a coil comb that’s it lol

Like I said, it varies from person to person. How long they take to form and what they end up looking like is unique to you.

Certain things can hinder your progress though; like the kind of products you use. All you really need is:
  • water
  • light doses of a natural oil(coconut oil, tea tree oil, Jamaican castor oil, etc.)
  • a residue-free shampoo(African Black Soap, Aloe Vera,etc.).
Don't use conditioners, since the main purpose of them is to detangled your hair and most shampoos will leave a residue to aid the conditioner in doing so.
