Boyz N the Hood is a classic and one of the best debuts from a filmmaker ever. No, it's not a perfect movie and yes, when you look back at it you can certainly see its flaws, plus you can argue that Menace is better, but its cultural impact and influence is undeniable. It's pretty much the Star Wars of hood movies

Then he dropped Poetic Justice :patrice:Definitely not a great movie though it's better than most people give it credit for. I like how he didn't just do a typical hood movie as his followup, and while its certainly flawed and lacks a clear sense of direction, its one of of the better black romance movies of the 90s imo

Higher Learning, I appreciate its ambition and I know a lot of people are fans of this movie but imo its a complete mess and a clear example of a filmmaker biting off more than he can chew. Spike Lee can handle this type of material well, John Singleton can't imo. The whole thing with the neo nazis and the over the top sniper scene at the end was ridiculous

Rosewood is a great movie, arguably better than Boyz N the Hood though nowhere near as influential. It's a shame it was a flop at the box office though given the subject matter it's not surprising

The Shaft remake was aight, it was fun, plus Peeples Hernandez is one of the most swagged out villains ever. Could've been better though

Baby Boy is obviously a hood classic, though I go back and forth on whether or not its actually an objectively good movie or just an unintentional comedy

2 Fast 2 Furious is :camby:This to me was just Singleton trying to get a nice paycheck

Four Brothers I've always felt was slept on and is a good example of a modern day western. Great performance by Chiwetel as well, that was the first movie I saw him in and I was :mindblown:when I found out he was actually British

Abduction, I didn't bother watching this shyt but I'm assuming its trash based on the previews and reviews

So looking back on all his films, do you consider Singleton's career a success? Or do you feel like he never reached the potential he showed with Boyz N the Hood?

I feel like Baby Boy is when his career began to dip. Once he saw it was flawed but still loved he sorta got comfortable with that.

In my mind its no question that Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Rosewood, and even Shaft are objectively better movies. However Baby Boy is probably his 2nd most celebrated film.

I think Snowfall was his "baby". Unfortunately, he didn't live to finish it.

I can’t say that given we know his career faced barriers that a lot of black directors face. It’s not shocking he did some blockbusters and director-for-hire flicks later. Making the films he wanted to make got harder. So we don’t know what his potential could have been because he wasn’t given opportunities to reach it.

RIP.

I like all his movies tbh, they are kind of fake deep but they’re enjoyable and not many black directors were casting such a wide net on blackness like that.

I like higher learning more than school daze for example
