Hip-hop is the culture, rap is the art of rhyming words which is a branch/element of the hip-hop culture. Hip-hop culture envelops 4 branches/elements: Breaking, MCing (rap), Graffiti, DJing. Hip-hop music is music that can either be rap music (music with rap lyrics) or just music with distinct hip hop elements like breakbeats and samples and DJ spins.

None of this is really up for debate, its literally how everything's been defined since day one :heh:

Yeah he said hip hop include elements of breakdancing, social upliftment etc.... and rap is more lyric based

Essentially he was just describing different eras in hip hop.

But after that...dude said so much bugged out shyt, I damn near tried to hijack his authority. Then he asked if I did the reading and I fell back :deadrose:

Hip Hop Culture has 4 elements or pillars: DJing (musical expression), graffiti (visual expression), breaking (bodily expression), and emceeing (vocal expression), as defined by the Universal Zulu Nation

Through these forms of expression, youth were able to share their thoughts and feelings artistically, while having fun

Your professor wasn't describing different eras, he was describing the different forms of expression practiced by the original b-boys and b-girls, that combined to make up Hip Hop Culture

Ok. I think he was just saying that rap music is one part of "hip hop" - which is correct.

Man..... straight off the bat... everyone in the class is white, including me :jawalrus:

shyt is exactly as wack as you'd think... the professor tried to say Q Tip invented Gangsta Rap :scust:

Before everyone attacks the OP and assumes that the professor was simply referencing the four elements, please read this above ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

the best coast
honestly i would say yeah

rap/rapping is a subgenre

dj'ing is a subgenre

beat making is a subgenre

not so much anymore but dance is kind of a genre too, think of the number of dances relating directly to a rap song

tagging as relating to rap is dead

i'd say those are all distinct parts of "hip hop"

there are are artists who do one or multiple but not all parts

Hip Hop is the genre.

"Rap" is an element of Hip Hop the Culture. That's sort of different than Hip Hop the music genre. The Culture includes Breaking and Graf, for instance. But "Rap" is like "Sing". Singing is not a genre. You sing in every genre.. including Hip Hop. You can rap to Bluegrass if you want. I have actually.

If you want to make subgenres, I guess you can go: East Coast, West Coast, South, Midwest.. Something like that. Another split could be by era. 70s 80s 90s.

Or a simple: Dance, Lyrical, Riding

Rap is just the act of rapping. It was born in Hip Hop so we claim it no matter who tries it, but a rap cannot make a Heavy Metal song into Hip Hop (you can make a Metal Hip Hop song but let me stay on target).

In short: Mary J Blige What's the 411 is Hip Hop. Nah mean? LL rapped on some wack Country song I never heard but that song is neither Rap or Hip Hop

Hip Hop is the culture, rap is an element.

And rap has been around a long time and will be around long after "Hip Hop" as we know it exists.

Somebody can be a rapper and not necessarily be Hip Hop. I've said it many times but a lot of country music fans right now are saying that the new shyt sounds too much like rap music because they are rhyming with a spoken word delivery. Those guys at BEST listen to some rap music and have let it influence some of their musical output but they are not of/from Hip Hop culture.

Here's a quick litmus test for your professor.

Put a kufi on his head and then slap that shyt off. If he doesn't get the reference he probably ain't Hip Hop enough to be teaching a fukking class on Hip Hop.

Rap is a sub genre of HipHop while HipHop is a full blown culture that contains Djing, Mcing (rap), Bboying/Street dance and Graff
