Interesting I'm in the same boat but I didn't enjoy going through hard times and when i see others in the similar situations better or worse I feel for them.

Imagine when you were going through that abuse it would've been nice at the time to have someone show empathy and compassion. Even if you made it out on your own that just tells me you could've went even farther had someone shown compassion and interest to see you do better.

Also the same way you look at those other people situation and said it's trivial someone who had it worse than you could do the same to you. And to me that's not a good look of seeing who had it worse. "my pain is real because I had it worse" mentality is dumb imo.

This is true.. and something that’s a flaw in myself that I gotta work on. You’re not wrong in anything you said, and the competition of “I’ve had it worse” is a real thing that’s not healthy, but is a reality in a lot of people’s mind

But that’s why I’m with my wife who has more than enough empathy for the both of us lol

Yeah I feel you man.

Also I think it's better for you mental to show mercy and compassion on other people.

Compassionate and a big heart sure. Probably not the most empathetic person though if I'm being truthful to myself.

Sometimes I'm too empathetic....I do realize life is hard especially for black people and folks have a lot of trauma and unhealed issues.

But some folks also make blatant poor judgment.

Yes. My family has housed people. Have picked people up off the side of the road. Donated food and money.

Life is hard. Too many of us to not make it a bit easier.
Same to everything you said deed wise, but some of those characters who were welcomed in pushed me towards emotional rigidity. I still do acts of kindness occasionally, but it was a journey reaching that point again.

It shouldn’t be a flex to say that. I feel bad when I do people wrong even if I don’t like them but that won’t stop me either. I always take myself out of the equation to assess most things

My Wife has made me realize those people didn’t deserve it.

Or I exposed myself to something else. It’s sad when we can believe in our brothers.

That’s a different conversation but I understand why. Case by case for me.

Was this change solely due to aging, or did significant life experiences also play a role? Has this change revealed any subtle, personal insights or small but meaningful shifts in how you experience life?
I don't recall specific events involved in the process, but the cumulative effect of small instances where I've somehow got put into somebody else's shoes probably played a role. That, going through hardship myself, and progressively understanding people's complexity and nuances better.

IMO empathy contributes to make my life feel way richer, and helps me navigate it better and make better decisions. It makes me more free too.
