Charles S. L. Baker (1859-1926) was an African-American inventor, who patented the friction heater.

Baker worked over the span of decades on his product, attempting several different forms of friction, including rubbing two bricks together mechanically, as well as using various types of metals. After twenty-three years, the invention was perfected in the form of two metal cylinders, one inside of the other, with a spinning core in the center made of wood, that produced the friction.[1] Baker started a business with several other men to manufacture the heater. The Friction Heat & Boiler Company was established in 1904, in St. Joseph, with Baker on the board of directors.[2] The company worked up to 136,000 dollars in capital, equal to nearly 4 million dollars in 2018.

there was a special on fox news a years back where they said most of the inventions from those olden days were by black people. fox news of all places said this.

i mean it make sense that a black man would invent so much because he was the one that had to suffer to do all the manual labor.

what annoys me is that chances are that none of the descendants of these inventors are benefiting from it right now.

I wonder how many schools, private or public teach this

Yup, that's why i didn't even bother with that killer mike/dj envy thread. Both type of schools can only teach you the basics from their hard structured curriculum. When really it's a parents responsibility to make sure their children get as much knowledge as possible, but nobody wants to talk about that.:sas1:

A lot of this is Black history that is relegated to a month where nobody really gives a fukk about learning the shyt instead of it being a part of American history where it affects you test scores and is a regular part of your curriculum. So nobody has to know and memorize the name of the inventor of the Traffic light or Radiator or Air conditioning unit but we know cheque writers like Edisson.

Black history month is an outdated concept, I know it seems to give emphasis but it is not utilized like that at all. How many things did you learn in Black history month that you were even tested on? :manny:

Make this apart of American history and make it stick.

We talk about that all the time. School and learning is about more than sending your kid off to school.

Who's we? The average parent believes school is supposed to teach their kids because thats what they pay for, either public with taxes or for private school. The topic of them being personally responsible for their child's education is not one they usually want to have.

We as in the board.... The average parent does not believe that. Depends what community you are talking about. The way education is presented to kids and enforced can be very tied into culture and society. I doubt you would say that the average parent in every community is on the same page in terms of kids and education... we know damn well this isn't true. Some kids going through prep courses and extra tutoring while their parents constantly monitor their progress while others are just sent to school and expected to come back with a good grade. There's maybe 1% of children that are truly functionally independent and self motivated in pursuing education to the highest capacity without guidance, motivation or a push. And when WE usually talk about this the conversation falls apart around parental obligations and brehs "not having" time to be involved in their kids education.

Reality is you always make time for things that are of importance.

Yeah that's why America isn't even top 15 in the world in education, cause parents are so responsible for their children's education.:martin:

The fact is most parents do feel it's the school's responsibility to teach their kids what they need to know and not theirs.
