Interpret that any way you wish. Some people I know (often producers/musicians) often hear entire compositions that they then have to rush and capture as its streaming into their awareness as inspiration. This can be that but its more about songs you already know and have heard before. Regular folks may experience a random song popping into their head with seemingly no external cue or trigger. Note I'm not talking about earworms where you get a radio repeat replay in your dome or a jingle stuck on loop.

I'm speaking on hearing a song just as you would with earphones in but without any tech beside what you're naturally equipped with. If so are you able to stop on command? Turn the volume up or down? If you don't what happens when you try and replay a song you know at will? Do you hear it as clearly as you would with headphones?

My bad broski

:salute:

I voted yes I produce and alot of times I build riddims by hearing what isnt there and adding it in

Yeah for beatmakers I know our internal modality preferences are totally different to the usual. I think thats what makes producers produce because regular people generally can't listen to a song and pull elements out of the mix or add them in in their head. I can flip sounds around and draw links between the "shapes" of different songs.

The last point was demonstrated so well in another thread recently:

Where the melody of one oldie triggered another then the flip before the OG sample that used the same keys. As the Red Star thread shows though I can't visualize at all (Option 1) and yet I can see the music just like I witness smells as having their own distinct color.

Sometimes I gotta physically play a song to stop it playing in my head. The whole song, multiple songs back to back or a section of a song will play uninterrupted like I'm listening to Spotify or Apple music.

I also experience this with songs/melodies I never heard before. I ask myself "am I supposed to make this?".

It was a joke!
All the time, it's always a song I haven't heard in months, or a potential sample I keep editing in my head

This one was it yesterday:

This aspect is really, really interesting because they're often so fresh and new. When they come through the surprise element is what sticks out for me because sometimes I'm genuinely stunned by what I hear in terms of creativity when (theoretically at least) that should be as impossible as tickling yourself. Shows that there is some higher order of thinking going on beyond the regular here.

Producers again. It really adds weight to my theory that those of us who were drawn to making beats or are musical in general are literally wired for it. Can you reverse a song in your head and hear it backwards? Try it with words first if you've never attempted before.

I have the chorus of All The Stars playing right now and I wish it would stop.

Try humming the song you want to release whilst matching its main key. For some reason the resonance often neutralizes an intrusive tune in my experience. Let me know if it works for you.

I can do a rough approximation, I'm sure a large part of it is memorization, but when I say edit in my head, I'm dragging and dropping drums, picking synths, arranging in the note editor, etc. and can reproduce that when I get home

Funny thing is, I can't reverse words that easy in my head

yes and its annoying as fukk cause once it starts, it can loop for days at a time...and its always the same handful of random choruses or lines...and usually songs that I dont even listen to like that:

right now at this very moment, i have lil wayne vans freestyle and keep it on the hush by Ludacris toggling in my brain :snoop:

i cant remember the last time I actually heard those songs

Try thinking about the words as sounds, not words. Meaning treat it like a melody and you'll be able to flip it around far easier.

Try humming the melody of the song whilst matching the key. The aim is to get the vibration level to match. If it works for you its like a delete button for unwanted audio. Another thing you can try is turning the volume up as its often easier to make the songs louder. Once you can do that its easy to turn it down and mute. Finally if none of these work then listen to the actual songs from start to end and you'll often find your internal DJ gets the hint.

whenever i'm doing something that has a strong memory associated with it i hear the music that was going on when i made the memory, listening to music is usually enough to get it out of my head
