Ever had someone ask if they can hold something to get something and you do that but ask them to bring you something then they dont bring anything and then hours later they ask for more to do something else? What kind of thoughts go in your mind besides

No. I don't expect money back. It's nerve wracking to expect payback from someone so broke they're asking me for money, so better not to put that expectation on someone who's going to fail every time. It's a gift, and if you pay it back, great. If not, whatever.

If I need the money back I shouldn't be giving it away.

It's only a loan if there's signed paperwork and an attorney involved before the exchange.

I don't understand the example. Do you run a pawn shop? If not, you're a mark who will continue to be a mark because you need to feel like your helping even/especially when you know the person is a lost cause. Co-dependency has many forms. Just say no. When they run out on you, you'll feel a weight lifted, and embarassed you were that sucker for so long after you see that friend/relative move on to other victims.
