Doing great at your job and silent = underselling yourself terribly
Doing great at your job and know how to make yourself available to everyone = Doors Open.
That makes sense.
I'm an introvert and have a hard time meeting people so networking is not my forte. I just try to stay incognito in my various jobs. I guess I did better at smaller companies because it wasn't easy to stay incognito. My own personality is my own c-b.

"So yea man I've to come to realize "Networking" really just means socializing."

:lawd:

Not quite 100%..

Networking is when you are trying to make moves so you're aligning yourself with the right connects. Also your conversations with them are usually work/job/funciton related.
When you socialize you're pretty much having small talk which is innocent but when your name comes up for stuff the boss says stuff like "She/He's nice, I like her/him"

Brehs this thread hits home.

some random thoughts on this subject

-Discretion is VERY KEY! Anything you say in a work setting can and will be used against you when its convenient and beneficial.

-Exercise your best poker face :ld:

-Like OP said NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK

-Never get too comfortable and become a career employee..as good as you think you have it..there are challenges out there that on paper may look like a step down but could yield great results in the long run.:smugdraper:

-Taking risks is what leaders do, don't be safe, don't fall into a malaise of 9-5 because if you do, you will be 45 with 2 kids, a wife, a mortgage, car payments, etc...and view your job as a means to survive :scusthov:

Well I've always Been the type to let my work speak for itself as opposed to trying to be known or all in everyone's face making sure they knew who I was. At my last job I got an outperformance award, clients liked me, and so did the people I worked with, I'm at a new job now with a higher position and higher salary because a colleague pretty much brought me to this company with her when she left my old job a year ago. Now I work directly under her.

The bolded is key ... let your work tell how good you are .. dont walk around saying you're good because you did so-and-so...

I have consultants and contractors call me when they see my name on the designed by, drawn by section of our CAD drawings... It's alwyas, hey i saw yor name on the drawings, its gonna be nice working with you again, etc...

That may not be a big deal to some or even my employer
New York City ... I'm an engineer
but what happens is I got those same contractors and consultants saying if i ever wanna leave they would love to have me..

Center self, inner self
4 years ago I learned a very heart-felt lesson- age old proverb rang true - don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Basically, I was supporting my ex-boss 100%. I wanted to be his right hand man. I worked my ass off & went above & beyond... you get the jist. But guess what? I was naive & didn't have the foresight to think in his shoes.

  • Everyone (obviously) look out for their interest foremost.

My ex-boss liked me. How could he not? I made his working life seem a breeze. But he ended up hogging me- promoting me or getting me into a better position meant he'd be losing a good worker. So I was stuck in the same position. And guess what? He got laid off. Suddenly I was all alone. My number 1 invested player was gone & few months later, I was laid off too.:to:

Going forward, I thought to myself- be that 'room worker' that network to everyone & commits to no one!

~5 years later today, at my current job, I finally found my own feet. I networked the hell out of everyone especially people ABOVE my boss.

Long story short, I found out that I get internally promoted today & of course my immediate boss liked me so much he wanted to keep me in same position, but it was my BOSS's BOSS that forcefully pulled me out because they needed me in a better place :blessed:

So yea man I've to come to realize "Networking" really just means socializing. The social structure is always what really determines who doesn't get fired, who gets promoted, etc....etc. Never has shiiit to do with skills or work ethic, though this doesn't hurt by any means.. Business is all who you know, timing and your negotiation skills. That's it:
Doing great at your job and silent = underselling yourself terribly
Doing great at your job and know how to make yourself available to everyone = Doors Open.

So yea work well for your boss, but fukkk them in the long run. If you want to move up, obviously network past the corporate cockk blocking C*nt if he/she proves an obstacle.

You know what I hate? When someone has something good happen and then has to come on here and brag about it, and try to serve up some life lessons as if this good thing has played itself all the way out. Congrats on your promotion, but this thread wasn't necessary.

I wasn't being an @sshole at all...dude went over my head...he did it twice...i even called him on it man to man the first time...and this dude turned right around and did it again...

If he'd never try to blatantly circumvent my authority for his own personal gain, he would have been straight...but he tried to circumvent my personal authority twice...on some behind the back shyt...so he had to pay the price...the price was his job

People always make these post about making power moves and always network and it's okay go over so and so head...well this is the other side of it...the snake got caught in the grass...the snake got his head cut off and thrown on the trash heap

That dude is going to find your home address and Jeffrey Dahmer you

shyt like that is why the work force will crumble in the not too distant future.

Nah, he not gonna come to my house...I stay to far away...and his unemployment check is so small that every week he has to decide between gas and food...the week he come out here is the week his wife kills him for wasting that bread and lunch meat money on gas
