We always hear about so-n-so player taking less money to "keep the team together", or "restructuring" their deals, etc.
But what's really to stop an owner from just saying that for salary cap purposes, yet giving a player a huge cash deposit on the low every week during a season to make up the difference? Or just outright cutting them a personal check for whatever amount.
All of these owners didn't necessarily acquire their billions the "right way"
, so what's to stop them from doing shady business on a even smaller level? And some of these players aren't the selfless individuals they're painted to be either, so they'd gladly accept.
It can still be doc'd for their personal tax purposes, but just not on the teams salary cap.
What do y'all think?
