Yes, anything that is not part of the dominant society causes them to scrutinize. Many immigrant (including white ones) change their name to fit in.

For years I thought Natasha and Tasha were ghetto names. Then I saw an article with this old white lady named Natasha and was like "There's an old white woman named Natasha?" and my homegirl was like...Natasha is a popular Russian name for a girl. Had me like

Same thing with Tamera. Thought it was just a black name, then all of a sudden I started meeting white women with that name.

Whether it is right or wrong it doesn't change the fact there is empirical evidence that people with black names face a racial bias with job applications.

So some of them get that work in the application process and the rest of them get that work at the actual interview. Either way it goes you are getting that work.

I'm sure they do but it's not a complete handicapped on them like I was saying earlier because alot of east indians and middle eastern folks still are able to take over a lot of fields and areas economically. I think the disadvantage of having a so-called ghetto name is there for black people but it isn't much more than the normal stigma you still a nikka at the end of the day whether you're carrying a white's man name or black name.

So all of those damn English and Scottish last names of Smith, Brown, Jones, Johnson, Neal, etc., are not a dead give away that the person is probably Black? I think that they would figure the shyt out anyway, once your ass came in for the interview. I guess if you are saying that it is just to get an interview the the name might be an issue, but once you actually show up the party is over anyway.

Btw, I don't even think that the names are the issue, because athletes and entertainers have desensitized the public on that shyt. The elephant in the room is that we are Black. That is is the issue.

I wouldnt include entertainers in the mix. Entertainers always are an exception. Travis Barker ( a whiteman)said he got noticeable tats so that no 9 to 5 would want him forcing him to follow his career in music. So even a whiteman knows that there are certain impressions one has to leave to fit in the status quo. Rappers getting high is normal...Average person might have a suprise urinalysis at a 9 to 5. Entertainers and the average joe are different.

Now what u said about the elephant in the room is true...But on Hidden Colors (cant remember which one) they went deeper and broke that shyt down about how you never see these top Black executives with any cultural resemblance...Like u dont see top Black ceos rocking dreads or dashikis. Thats for a reason, they not trying to shake up the status quo. So going back to the "Ghetto names" thing and job employment, I believe that it is more about seperating the "Blacks who dont put their culture on their sleeve" versus "Blacks who do put their culture on their sleeve." Your parents didn't name u Bill or Jill? U might might not fit the "status quo" image. On the flipside anyone who comes off "cultural"maybe seen as someone with influence, which can also fall in a 'radicaI' image. Is that an Ankh on your necklace? Is that a 'free Huey' button you wearing? Is that a Final Call newspaper on your desk? "Pro Black" resemblence will always rattle things more then someone who isn't on that in your face "Pro Black" tip. And A resume with a first name like "Tupac" sets off alarms.....Even if that person is a regular guy.

How do you know that priyanka has a meaning? You just assume that it does.

How do you know that Shaniqua has no meaning or origin? It could have been a corruption of some other name. Name corruption happens all the time.

You have fukking east indians and arabs with names so god damn hard to pronounce it's not even funny and a lot of them are still able to succeed and do fine here. I think it could hurt in some cases but I don't think it would be a complete handicap on that person's life especially not if they are a diligent, intelligent, and opportunistic person.
