I don't see it ever going away completely but do you think after a few years people will realize the negative effects of displaying your entire life on social media and decrease it's use, or will it continue to be used as an open diary for people?

Snapchat is about to IPO into a real company soon according to their CEO. Social media is only going to continue growing.

The only company to lose from this are companies that don't have any footprint in this category such as Google.

Nah, it'll get bigger. Eventually people will get tired of Facebook, and that's when the new wave'll hit. Just like what happened with MySpace. But it might be a lot harder for Facebook to fade away, considering how much money is invested into that company.

Instagram and Twitter are definitely staying for a while longer though. Especially Instagram.

Social media is the best and worst thing to happen to humanity. Yeah you can keep in touch with old friends and what not, but mad average people started feeling themselves more and women became even more infatuated with their looks and think just because thirsty dudes give them 1,000 likes that they're all of a sudden "untouchable celebrities" it's gotten to a point that cell phones have made it possible for you to take it everywhere with you so you never really leave it alone... it's not sad, it's scary as hell... to be dependent on say a fb or twitter like it's part of your system

You're right.
Socializing in it's most simple form(Talking to ppl, going to bars/clubs) is a human necessity.
I guess Social Media good or bad is the newest way of doing so.
