a subject for years has the same credibility as someone who has their masters or phd..or any degrees for that matter

Not something like a doctor though because that is life or death

Why/why not

If they studied the exact same criteria and read the same books then I don't see why anyone wouldn't respect said person

People like status symbols though.

I don't respect anyone with a PHD who calls themselves a doctor, especially when theres plenty of famous folks with PHDs that don't walk around with that label

Michael Shermer for example

I do wonder about this because it is true that certain ways of thinking become dated. People with the paper work can lose their credibility, wether it be because they are quacks or not seems to vary. What is a degree but a mind that is good at remembering? In some instances.

Yes. I don't see why it would matter if you were self educated or educated in an institution, if you read books and learnt from people who actually knew what they were talking about, why does it matter?

Interpersonal, yes. Society, no. To elaborate, you may think that someone knows about a subject and respect their opinion but society won't give them the same credibility or respect. Someone you know may know about spaceships and rocket science and stuff like that but nasa would rather hire the person with the degree. Even tho some people just aren't good at certain subjects and great at others and it hurts them. I'd do my research myself if I'm iffy about what anyone says or get another opinion. Not everyone knows everything.

Yea there are certain things that I, or an employer wouldn't just be like, yea ok I believe you, because you need that third party confirmation that you have actually worked with certain materials not available to just any person. Actual hands on experience > than not with electronics, especially ones designed to combust.

Then again, there are well traveled people with street smarts that could survive any area you drop them in. What reference would anyone need to believe them? There are none, except them being alive despite their existance in various societies. It's a very thin line.

They could have as much knowledge or skills, maybe even more, but credibility is what a degree or a cert can give you. It's a respectable institution being able to vouch for you and give you proof that you're up to their standards.

On another note, college is too expensive :damn:
