Depends. It looks good on the outside.
You need to test drive it to find out what, if any, problems there are. Also, look up that car in the used car review issue of Consumer Reports. BMW 5-series have an inconsistent record when it comes to problems. Some years, the 5'er has so many problems than other years, such that you would be better off in a used Toyota Corolla.

Good-looking car. That's the classic e39 5-series. One of the best cars of it's time. Looks to have the M-Sport pkg too which means upgraded suspension and some cosmetic bits. Mileage looks good for the year and the price is certainly fair, but I dunno that engine is kind of anemic. Not sure if it'll have the pickup you're looking for. But if you just wanna have a comfortable cruiser that handles well and don't mind paying for repairs, it looks like a good buy. Like others said, get a mechanic to give it a full work-over before you buy it.
