Do you think Will Smith has the ability to be a better actor than he is?

Yes. He has the ability to be a fantastic actor. He hasn't been choosing the best roles lately. I loved him in I Am Legend, despite my inability to rewatch the movie due to :to: 3 little birds and the puppy.

I really just don't think he's interested in testing his range that much. Dude is pretty consistent in trying to be in blockbuster type flicks (mainly big budget action joints). He was really good in Pursuit of Happiness though and I remember people really hyped his performance in 6 Degrees of Separation. It's kinda funny that he passed on some major hits but managed to be in Wild Wild West and After Earth.

He should man up and sign on for True Detective Season 2 or something...throw a curve for a change.

Here's an even better question
Does Eddie Murphy's 1 Golden Globe mean he has more critical acclaim than Will?

Well I know that makes the argument look weak, but on the other hand, at least a recognized body of critics (HFPA) recognized his work at one point. The viewers like Will smith. He makes money. But so did Ben Affleck from 1997 to the Gigli era.

I kind of agree with you.
I mean Independence Day is one of the highest grossing films of all time and has a few Oscars but Eddie has been recognized for his acting individually.
