This is going to be a thread making fun of white people but people should read the article and dig deeper. So much of what we do in modern times and wholeheartedly believe in is because of marketing, capitalism, and making white people rich.
Animals smell. Youâre an animal.
The soap advertisements that kicked off modern marketing relied on one concept: B.O. We think of body odor as a given, but that too is an invention. Our feet âsmellâ thanks to Bacillus subtilis. This bacteria has potent antifungal properties. Shoes werenât available for most of history, a period in which smelly feet bestowed a strong evolutionary trait. As Hamblin writes, we didnât evolve to smell, we evolved in harmony with protective microbes that we just happen to find unpleasant.
While a number of players in the wellness and skincare industries likely have good intentions, so much of what is sold is unnecessary, and even damaging. The marketing machine makes us feel âless thanâ in order to sell us products that complete us. As Hamblin concludes, evidence-based companies would take an opposite approach to skincare and hygiene: less is more. As that will never produce million-dollar companies, we continue to sacrifice health in the name of branding.
Be both fallacious and nasty to justify not showering, brehs. We aren't living in the wild where bacterias that combine with sweat to form BO are needed as a protective barrier against pathogens. The other points in their article are also terrible starting points, I don't use disinfectant on surfaces with the intention of killing 99% of germs, I use it to simply clean the surfaces on a weekly basis and they are typically bundled in a plentiful manner. I'm aware the skincare industry is unregulated, that isn't a reason to avoid all skincare, simply wade through the products that contain compounds intended to save on production costs. Isn't hard to find studies on the compounds within your skincare products and how they react with the human body, you can find a load of dermatologists on youtube referencing those studies. And when you are bringing up capitalism as a reason for why you should be able to stink, I can't take you seriously. I would rather meets demands and not stink vs stinking, the annual totals for skincare is insignificant for most people unless you are running to expensive products. Also, supply and demand isn't some inherent evil, maybe advertisement can be, but to think soap can't exist within a market under socialism is just being ignorant of the field of thought.
