Aight baseball fans, now that i've got your attention:

I realized a li'l bit ago that when Jeter retires after this season, there aren't gonna be any more
true baseball "stars". I say this meaning Jeter is the last player in the sport that was part of the
pop culture consciousness. Am I right?

Who else is someone that the average person on the street would know outside of their own local team?

Puig? Harper? maybe Trout?

Do you think is because (1) baseball "fame" is more team-based than it used to be, (2) baseball players
just don't have the personalities they did in years past, or (3) baseball just isn't the draw that it used to be?

You should change the thread title to get genuine discussion about this topic.

MLB is the worst of the major sports at marketing it's star players. I don't remember if I said it on here or :hamster: but I doubt most people could recognize players by voice alone outside of their own team. Part of that is because a lot of the best players are Latin and don't speak English very well.

Naw - I knew if I titled it this way people who wanted to talk about baseball would come in, instead of the "baseball is wack" crew.

I'm not sure about your point about Latin players, because they've always been here. Fernando Valenzuela, Sammy, or Juan Gonzalez
weren't the best english speakers either, but they were legit stars...

Those guys were balanced out by a lot of American stars and I think they were a lot more accessible too. Besides David Ortiz, name some current Latin players who are outgoing or want to be seen/heard.

Because the demographics for baseball now are old people and once they all die who will watch?

I'm pretty sure Mike Trout is on a commercial

See I haven't even seen a Trout commercial...last one i've seen was the Jeter all the celebrities...
that's kinda what made me think: who else in MLB will matter when they retire like that?

That's just the thing - nobody jumps out at me. This is kind of what I meant with "number 2" in my first post.
