In the Red Sox defense, Crawford did not project to be a bad contract. He was great when they signed him and there weren't really any signs that he would be falling off before the contract ended. No excuses for the Dodgers though, they had already seen him underperforming for a year and a half in Boston and knew they were gambling.

The contracts of Fielder and Pujols etc are the ones everyone knew would turn out awful. To get 2-3 years of them playing well, you had to pay for the 5-8 years on the back end where they would be
